A Caddie’s Journal at the Pinnacle Bank Championship

The Pinnacle Bank Championship on the Web.com Tour brings professional golf back to Omaha for the first time since 2013. NebraskaGolf.org contributor and tour caddie Steve Buroker is caddying for last week’s winner on tour Brice Garnett. Steve will share his insights with us each day in the journal below. We hope you enjoy a look into life as a caddie on tour!

Pro Am Day (Wednesday July 19th, 2017)

What a great opportunity this week! Thanks to my good friend, Judd Cornell, I am looping for last week’s winner, Brice Garnett. Brice contacted Judd mid week last week and Judd gave him my name. Brice and I met a couple times last year on the PGA Tour, but of course, being a caddy, I’m really never sure if the golfers remember who you are.

Let me start by saying Indian Creek is HARD! On Pro Am Day, they always tip the course out. And with the wind blowing 20+ today and a course measured close to 7600 yards, that’s plenty of golf. The golf course is in extremely great shape. The players have their hands full this week with the temps around 100 and 10 – 20 mph winds. It will be tough to keep the grass green with those conditions. Small quote from Brice today, “I think the BIG tour could play here.” Kinda neat to hear that. So the IC staff should be very proud!

Round 1 (Thursday July 20th, 2017)

Round 1 is in the books! I made it around. 14 holes of very little action. 2 birdies and two bogies. Then it seems professional golfers do what professional golfers do – birdied three of the last four to turn a ho-hum round into -3 under 68. Round two starts for us at 8:13 and it will present a few more challenges as, once again, it’s gonna be hot. But we are to get some wind today. That’s always tricky, trying to guess how much the wind is hurting, helping, if it’s helping from the left, hurting from the rt, etc.

Round 2 (Friday July 21st, 2017)

Day 2 done!! Day three and four to come. Always nice to make the cut. Long day out there today. Hot out there and everyone (especially me) seemed to be dragging there at the end.
Brice Garnett had three birdies and three bogies today for even par. The field is extremely bunched up and anyone making the cut is gonna have a chance.

Brice, after last weeks W, is playing well. He is currently 12th on the money list. Good things to come. He will need to finish as high as he can to insure good status on the PGA tour for next season. So another good weekend could go a long way. Brice is originally from the NW part of Missouri so he’s had lots of encouragement along the way this week. Along with some folks watching me (not really) to see if I was gonna make it and his crew we’ve had some nice support. Thank You!!

Round 3 (Saturday July 22nd, 2017)

Day three was a good one! “We” moved from the middle of the pack to a tie for 6th. Six under 65 today has put Brice in a good position to move up on the money list.

Our day started kinda slow with a couple pars, then on three we had a 8 footer to save par. He slid that in and it seemed to free us up a little. Great drive on 4 and a five iron to 17 feet and an eagle. Made a 25 footer on 5 for another birdie. On 7 he went hybrid/hybrid to the fringe and a chip to a foot-another birdie. On 8, hit a nice hold up 6 iron shot against the wind to 13 feet and made that for birdie as well. Par on 9 and we make the turn at 5 under for the day and eight under for the tournament.  The back side we felt like we had chances but a PW to three feet on 14 was our only birdie. Still a bogey free 65 is always well played!

Mr. Ryder (we were paired with him the first 2 days) has obviously played well to have a seven shot lead. That’s gonna be hard to catch, but u never know. We will go play hard tomorrow and see what the outcome brings.
It was great to see good crowds out there once again today!! Several following our group and several mingling throughout the course all day. I stuck around and watched Gootch finish up today and it was great to see all the folks out there watching and rooting him on. Gonna be a great final round! Hope to see you all out there tomorrow!

Round 4 (Sunday July 23rd, 2017)

What a great week Caddying for Brice Garnett! Super great guy! Hope for the best for him next year on the BIG tour.
So yesterday wasn’t great initially. Three over thru 5 when you’re hoping for three under doesn’t exactly get good vibes going. But a little pep talk on six tee resulted in Brice hitting every green on the way in and three birdies to get it back to even for the day. T14. Still slipped a few spots, but improved from 12th to 11th on the money list.
As some of you may know I had been caddying on the BIG tour most of the last year and a half for Chad Collins. He shot 60 on Friday in the opposite field (of the British Open) event in Alabama. He had a chance yesterday but a solo second place finish greatly improved his chances of keeping his card for next year.

Again thanks to everyone that came over and said Hi. Wish I could of chatted more with you all, but I feel like I need to stay with my player just in case. Great to see such great crowds out there this week. The staff at Indian Creek should be proud!!! What a great week of golf!! Thanks to them golf is back in Omaha!
